Making Waves: Four brands building soundscapes.
GONG BATHS AT RE:MIND
Sound waves
Based in Belgravia’s Eccleston Yards, Re:Mind Studio was the first meditation studio to open its doors in London, in 2017. Founder Yulia Kovaleva’s goal is to make meditation accessible and engaging for modern Londoners. Gong baths are its signature offering, combining sound therapy with relaxation techniques, using ancient gongs and other instruments.
POLYPHONIC EATING
Turning the tables on taste
In September, London-based, China-born DJ Yu Su ran her first “Polyphonic Eating” event. It’s the latest iteration of the tunes-meets-tastebuds supper clubs she’s been running across the world’s major cities (including Tokyo, Shanghai and Dublin) since 2022. Held at Farringdon hi-fi bar Space Talk, diners were served seven courses tied together by a soundtrack designed to give the feeling of one dish flowing into the next. Or, as Yu Su puts it, “a synthesis of taste, texture, tone, disprofumo, aroma, frequency, light and shadow”.
KINDA STUDIOS
Beats to the brain
Hoxton-based Kinda Studios is a branding agency combined with a neuroscience lab. Its team is made up of scientists, researchers and artists who combine their skills to answer creative briefs from brands and to conduct their own research on how the human brain responds to different inputs. For running apparel brand On, Kinda created a playlist designed to boost performance using different melodies and frequencies.
JAZU BAR
Sit and listen
After three years of pop-ups and residencies, Jazu Bar recently found a permanent home on Deptford High Street, south east London. The space is intimate, featuring a stripped-back DJ booth and bespoke sound system — with elm wood horn speakers and a massive subwoofer. Jazu is yet another addition to the UK’s growing hi-fi listening bar scene. Jazu is Japanese for “jazz”, paying homage to the country’s kissa bars, where punters go to indulge in silent appreciation of jazz music. At Jazu, though, you won’t get told off for talking.
